Can You Live at Home While Your Roof Is Being Replaced?

The answer is yes—you are able to remain living in the home. There are some people who choose to go elsewhere while the project in progress, but most will stay at home. While the job can be significant, it will typically be less than a week before it is completely done, barring any unforeseen circumstances such as extreme weather or a need for some significant repairs.

If you do opt to stay at home, though, be prepared for a lot of noise. There are going to be people walking back and forth across your roof, and there will be a lot of hammering, air nailing and air compressor noises. For some people, getting out of the house for a little bit might help them with their sanity if their other option is being at home listening to the work all day long.

For those of you who decide to stay at home, here are a few tips for getting through the job without any major difficulties.

Dealing with kids and pets

If you’ll be at home with your kids, make sure your kids know what to expect. If they’re young, the noises might be a little scary. You can make sure they have safe spaces in the home to play in. Also, make sure everyone in the house knows not to go outside to play while the work is in progress. There will be a lot of debris falling off the roof, as well as nails lying around that will get cleaned up at the end of the job. It’s best not to have kids running around down below.

The situation can be stressful for pets, too, so if you’re able, it might be a good idea to get them out of the home. If that’s not possible, keep them in a quiet area, such as the basement. Otherwise, your best bet is probably to park on the opposite side of the street to be out of the way of the roofers’ trucks and any potential falling items. You won’t want to keep your vehicle in the garage while it’s being worked on, as the impacts of items on the roof could cause items inside the garage to shake and fall off their shelves.

Furnishings and landscaping

Bring in any valuables or furniture you have outside your home, and put down some tarps to protect your landscaping. Bring in potted plants or place them in out-of-the-way areas.
